New Horse Tax
could cost owners £100 per year |
Opponents of a
new 'horse tax' proposed by the Department for Environment, Food and
Rural Affairs (Defra) now fear the tax could cost horse owners an
additional £100 per year.
The new tax
has been propsed to help fund equine disease control and to improve
health awareness and animal welfare.
The original
plan expected the levy to be set around £10.50 per horse per
annum but the added costs of setting up and running the scheme could
push this charge to nearer £100.
There has been
widespread opposition to the scheme from the British Equestrian
Federation, British Equestrian Trade Association, The British Equine
Veterinary Association, British Horse Society, British Horseracing
Authority, Thoroughbred Breeders' Association, National Trainers
Federation, World Horse Welfare, Welsh Pony and Cob Society and the
Racehorse Owners Association. |
