The
first New Forest ponies are believed to have roamed the woods and
moorlands of Hampshire over one thousand years ago. People living in
the area were granted the right to graze their ponies on land
previously used for a Royal hunting ground. The New Forest pony has a
good temperament and is a willing learner. The breed standard has an
upper height limit of 148 cms. Breed standard ponies must not be
piebald, skewbald, spotted or blue eyed cream. Similarly palomino
stallions with dark eyes cannot be licensed. White markings are only
permitted on the head and lower limbs. The New Forest pony should be of
working type with strong quarters, straight limbs, round feet and lots
of flat bone. Movement shoud be free and straight.
