The numnah
or saddle pad traditionally
helped protect
the saddle from dirt and
horse sweat
whilst also adding padding for the horse when saddled. Some
modern numnahs and
pads can
be adjusted to
compensate for saddle fit problems
or horse ailments. Numnahs can also have added cushioning to reduce
impact on both the horse and rider. The traditional shaped numnah
conforms to the saddle shape whereas a square pad numnah is shaped to
allow for a motif to be displayed in the corners whilst riding.
