Horses with
Tick Parasite Disease Piroplasmosis (EP) |
A disease
spread by ticks called equine piroplasmosis (EP for short) has been
found in 101 horses at a ranch at Kleberg, Texas in the United Sates.
The
microscopic parasites are present in the red bloods cells and
symptoms include weakness, loss of appetite, fever, anemia, jaundiced
mucous membranes, swollen abdomen and labored breathing. Recent
studies have estimated that between 10 and 50% of those with the
disease will eventually die from it.
Neighbouring
farms and stables have been put on alert.
